"Participants... not Spectators"

Dear Friend

Focus on the Family Africa (Focus Africa) has become an organization of activities – not just ordinary activities, but life-changing Kingdom activities where we continue to see God at work in all we do. It excites all of us at Focus Africa, when we are joined by many of you out there, to achieve great things for the Lord’s Kingdom. And what is more fulfilling for us is to witness lives being changed, family standards improving and thriving, youth being channelled towards their goals, business people taking new cognizance of what “success” is

all about, and much more… as the Kingdom of God establishes itself in the lives of the people we deal with on a daily basis.

In the last issue, I mentioned the invitation we had extended to the President of the Global Focus on the Family, Mr. Jim Daly based in Colorado Springs, USA. I am glad to report that Jim came in April accompanied by the Chief Operations Officer, Glenn Williams. We took time, with Jim and Glenn, to celebrate the contribution of the van den Heever family to the work of Focus Africa over the past 17 years, and to inaugurate a new generation of leaders who will take Focus Africa into what God has planned. Whilst here, Jim was the guest speaker at our Donor Event, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the 350 guests who attended. We have included some pictures and a brief summary reflecting on the outcome of that event in this issue... [read more]

As is core to the ministry, Focus Africa continues to respond to the needs of our communities. To that end, in September we are again bringing out Mr. Rob Parsons, the internationally renowned speaker and author from Care for the Family in the UK, to address you on both Family and Business related matters. Rob is now a well known Focus guest speaker to many South Africans and I would therefore encourage those of you who have had a chance of listening to Rob in previous seminars to seize this opportunity to invite your family, your friends, your Church family and your work colleagues to come to the seminars. We are taking Rob to Port Elizabeth for the first time, and also to Zambia! In addition, Rob will also speak in Pretoria on “The Heart of Success” (business leaders take special interest) and in Johannesburg on “The 21st Century Parent” – a relevant and fascinating topic to all parents, single parents, foster parents and grandparents alike... [read more]

We are very encouraged at Focus Africa to see how the Truth Project has taken off in many places in South Africa. For those of you who have not had a chance of attending any of our local trainings planned around the country, please do not hesitate to contact our office for details. We are more than ready and eager to come to your area. You will also be glad to know that we have successfully launched the Truth Project in Tanzania - East Africa! We will share the pictures and story with you in the next issue... [read more]

Our work on the continent continues to grow. Please continue to remember us in your prayers. For us at Focus Africa, it’s not just doing activities, it is more about engaging in activities that will establish the Lord’s Kingdom here on earth, leading to the thriving of families in Africa. Join us... become participants with us, in fulfilling this vision for the Kingdom of God.
May the Lord bless you all.

Sincerely

Dr Amon Kasambala
Chief Executive Officer

[BACK]

Events in our lives are wonderful times for celebration, and so it was when Focus on the Family Africa hosted the President and CEO of Focus on the Family, Mr Jim Daly.
Because of other international commitments, his visit to South Africa was very brief… 4 days in total. Mr Daly was the guest speaker at a Friend and Fundraising Dinner held in Durban by Focus on the Family Africa. The setting for 350 guests, the majority of whom came from the greater Durban area, contributed visually to a most enjoyable and memorable evening. Focus on the Family’s Global Brand was portrayed throughout the décor which was creatively displayed at tables of ten.

The object of the evening was:

  • To introduce Jim to some of our ‘Focus Friends’
  • To provide a platform for Jim to share his testimony and the Lord’s blessing on his life
  • To thank personally those who support the ministry financially
  • To encourage others to financially support the work of Focus Africa
  • To update all on the global strategies of Focus on the Family.

“…….thanks to you and your team for a wonderful evening. Together we can make a difference in peoples’ lives.”

“… what a marvellous evening, but most importantly… the message and purpose of the evening was clear and powerful.
I have always been a champion of Focus on the Family, but now that I am better informed, I am even more so now.
What an awesome cause.”

We are so appreciative to all who gave financially to support one of the four main target areas listed below. Within the content of this newsletter are stories and reports from various Focus departments involved with these projects. As can be seen from the following information, we calculated what was needed, and believe that with your help we can manage to reach the targets:

“…I expressed how impressed I was by the significant accomplishments you
(Amon Kasambala) and your team regularly achieve with a relatively small staff and budget - the Lord is using Focus Africa to make an incredible impact, and it was a privilege to again see this firsthand!”

BREAKING NEWS!!

ROB PARSONS
COMING TO SOUTH AFRICA:
Sept 1st-10th

For those friends living in Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria… you will be delighted to know that we are busy planning the itinerary of International speaker Mr Rob Parsons, from Care for the Family (UK). Port Elizabeth and Pretoria take note! He is coming to YOUR city, and we are looking forward to seeing you.
If you live in Zambia, or have family and friends there, Rob and Dianne will also be speaking in Lusaka and Livingstone during this time.
Both Rob and his wife Dianne are known to many of you, and they will be conducting seminars on both Business and Family life. Mark your diaries for the early part of September…and be sure to let your friends and family know! Details will follow as soon as they are confirmed.

Described by the Daily Mail as 'the man who reinvented fatherhood!’

JOIN FOCUS AS A VOLUNTEER?

Occasionally, Focus on the Family Africa calls on volunteers who are always willing to help with tasks that are relatively simple, sometimes time-consuming, but highly rewarding. Events such as the one referred to before, and the Rob Parsons Events scheduled for September, require an enormous amount of planning, and we want to invite you to be part of our VOLUNTEER DATABASE.
Recently, some of our Volunteers came to the Focus offices as a workparty to pack chocolates and nougat into attractive presentation gifts for the Jim Daly Event at The Elangeni Hotel. What a great job they did, and what fun they all had!

Volunteers tying ribbons around chocolate boxes

Some were really disappointed when the task was completed as they had enjoyed such fellowship, and had made new friends. (They were treated to tea and cake as well, otherwise we could have ended up short of chocolates!!)

Our Wish List would be to create a Band of Volunteers in the main centres around the country. These groups would form a vital part of our organisation when Focus hosts events away from home. We need both men and women, for the tasks are varied and require different strengths. Ideally, each group would have a person who would be the co-ordinator. Your involvement will help Focus on the Family Africa minister to families even more effectively.

If you would like to be a ‘Volunteer Friend of Focus’, we would love to hear from you. Give Marge a call and chat to her about how you can help us Help Families Thrive.

THE TRUTH PROJECT

Friends, in the words of the popular song from quite a while ago…. ‘We’ve only just begun…’ we are trusting God, through the power and strength of His Holy Spirit, to continue the work that has been started; to share and teach the good news of God’s Truth…….. and ultimately strengthen the body of Christ herself.

Since our last publication, more Local Trainings have taken place in Durban, Johannesburg, East London and Cape Town, as well as a first presentation for Kokstad; at the end of April, the Truth Project crossed our borders and visited Tanzania!

Truth Project Local Training in East London, Westville and Lenasia

“We are very excited about the possibility of what God can do through this course. Our young people desperately need the biblical foundations & worldview to engage meaningfully in God’s world.” ~ Justin Tamlin

Challenges that arise from the Truth Project are expected and welcomed, and so we are issuing a call for your “most difficult questions”—questions that either you or those you know have wrestled with. These are questions about God, about the Bible, about Jesus, about Christianity and religion, about truth and faith and evil and suffering… any and all. The Truth Project promotes understanding among Christians through our sharing of ideas with each other. The Truth Project is about ideas! The Online Community is where you can interact with other truth seekers from across the country, and the world!

“This truly has been, and continues to be, a life-changing exercise. I think for me, mostly, it has given me the courage to stand up and be proud to be called ‘Christian’... and to feel honoured that God, the Holy Spirit cared about me enough to stop me in my tracks.... and get my attention!!”
~ Roz Neilson

Thank you so much for the wonderful responses that we have received so far and bless you as you keep those small group registration forms coming. Just to remind you again how important it is for us to receive these forms. We know that you are as passionate as we are about this worldview curriculum, so hold the Torch of Truth high and let it burn as bright as ever.

Deuteronomy 32:4
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.

God continues to open more doors in schools and churches, where over 100 workshops were held during this period of time. Our facilitators have travelled thousands of kilometres to conduct these seminars, mostly on roads badly eroded by heavy rain, and often on dirt tracks in order to reach the workshop destinations in near and far away places. Working with appreciative people always makes these trips worthwhile, for which we give God the glory.

NO APOLOGIES

March was a ‘more-than-the-usual’ month for us at Focus on the Family Africa! Our dedicated “No Apologies” manager, Nontla Ngcobo glorified God in her marriage to Sipho Mkhabela. We were enthralled as we watched her walk down the aisle in her white dress towards Sipho, who was eagerly awaiting her arrival. He was about to receive a woman who had kept herself, just for him.

Nontla and Sipho leaving the church after their ceremony.

Nontla’s Story: “Sipho is a teacher, who had already been trained as a facilitator for “No Apologies”. We met at a school where I was training, and where he was not even scheduled to be! I could see he was a man of God, and even though we were in different parts of the country, Sipho accounted himself to me every day regarding his movements. He spoke with God concerning me and we were engaged in October, and after I also received confirmation from God, we were married in March 2009”.

We pray that God will bless the many children who have heard the message of “No Apologies” through people like Nontla, and that they too will have the wonderful joy of keeping themselves pure for marriage. If all our people did this, there would no longer be the scourge of sexually transmitted infections, including the dreaded HIV and AIDS virus. And yes, teaching abstinence is realistic; in fact as realistic as teaching a child to cross a busy and dangerous road safely!
‘Wait For Love’ because ‘Love Is Worth The Wait’

PARENTING WITH ASSURANCE

Enrich your work staff or school parent body by conducting “Parenting With Assurance” courses with them, or as a series of one hour ‘short talks’. These have been developed for both the Corporate environment, as well as the domestic market. One response from a school in Gauteng to a talk was “Thank you again for your inspiring and thought provoking talk last week.”

Over the past few months we have heard a good number of parents telling us of their shock at finding out that their children were actually addicted to one or other dangerous behaviours. Most testified that they had no idea when it started or how it started. We need to learn all that we can, as prevention is certainly healthier and less expensive than cure!

If you have any suggestions to share on how we can stay near to our children,do drop us a line. We would love to hear from you. Email Gavin at gavink@fotf.co.za

Staying ‘near’ to your child
Many parents ask us for advice on how they can keep close to their children and we would like to share the following practical actions we can take to ‘stay near’ to them.

  • Start from an early age. The earlier the better.
  • Spend as much time as possible with your children – they generally prefer a game outside with you than a computer game or the cartoon channel.
  • Make time for outings together
  • Switch the TV and your cell phones off during mealtime. This is a great time to communicate about the day
  • Watch out for your possible negative body language which could be an indicator to your child that they are wasting your time
  • Learn to be an interested listener – find out where your child spends his day, who their friends are, and about their concerns and their joys. Rather listen more and do less telling them what to do
  • Listen to what your child is not saying – like “is that injury really from a fall or maybe from a school bully?”
  • Probe a little when you see a marked emotional change in your child-it is better to deal with a possible problem early on than to find out bad news a few years down the line.

Counselling Calls ........... 724

Testimony

“…I was praying for someone like you to answer my email, and it happened. Thank you for your prayers, understanding and love.”

May we share a concern with you?

We are faced with the increasing need for the services of reliable Christian counselling, and counsellors… countrywide. At our Friendraising Dinner recently, we shared the vision for our own on-campus counselling centre. Many of our constituents can be assisted by telephone or email, but there are those who require face-to-face counselling. Currently, such cases are referred to psychologists in their area who meet our criteria, and who are on our referral base. Many contact Focus on the Family as a result of having heard one of the Focus 25 minute daily radio broadcasts, and recognising a concern in their own lives. In the light of this initiative, we are prayerfully seeking what doors the Lord would open, at the same time recognising that the logistics of such can be complex and can take a great deal of time to implement.

We share this vision with you and request that you please pray for us as we continue to seek God’s direction and the finances for this ministry. In the meantime, if we can assist you in any way with a difficult situation you might be going through, be it your marriage, a parenting issue, an aged parent, please don’t hesitate to give us a call or email us. While we do not claim to have easy solutions for all of your challenges, we’re here to listen to you, and believe that no other investment of our time or energy could be more worthwhile.

Until we meet again! God Bless

RADIO

NEWSFLASH.... the Focus on the Family Africa Broadcast Award went to the Western Cape radio station Radio Tygerberg 104Fm. This was the first time that Focus on the Family had offered a Trophy to broadcasters, the occasion being the annual gala dinner held in Johannesburg by the Association of Christian Broadcasters in March. The winning station offered a number of family orientated programmes on air, as well as succeeded in gaining financial support from large secular organisations to fund their radio station’s family building events. Radio Tygerberg has certainly ‘Walked the Talk’ for 2008 and we congratulate them. This trophy is a floating trophy and will be re-awarded every year.

NEWSFLASH..... a planned visit from Jeff Brown (Producer Global Content Creation) from our head office in Colorado Springs, USA, was a worthwhile and valuable occasion.
Jeff focused on mentoring our broadcast team and concentrated on production of local content in the context of global standards. Although we learnt volumes from Jeff, we believe that we sent him home with unforgettable memories of ‘spicy bunny chows’ and also…a whole new vocabulary – ‘Eish’!

NEWSFLASH...... the visit of Jim Daly (President and CEO of Focus on the Family USA) was an unbelievable privilege for us. With limited time available in a very busy schedule, we managed to squeeze 5 telephonic interviews with selected radio stations into one hour! To those who were able to call us, thank you for keeping to the time frames and we hope that your 6 minute interviews were as valuable to your listeners as your call was to us. Mr Daly thoroughly enjoyed those moments with you.

NEWSFLASH........ February 2009 saw Dr Dobson (after serving 32 years as the Chairman of the Board for Focus on the Family) step down and was elected to the position of Founder and Chairman Emeritus. We are pleased to reassure you that the familiar voice of Dr Dobson, who based his ministry on Radio broadcasting all those years ago, will continue to be heard hosting Focus on the Family radio broadcasts into the future.

“Dear friends at Focus on the Family Africa
Thank you for all the great programmes I have listened to for about 15 years. I just love listening to Dr James Dobson and all the wisdom he shares. You know people sometimes ask, ‘which celebrity would you like to meet?’ I most certainly would love to meet the man who shared so much on the radio, which I would never have been able to read as I am partially sighted and it has become a challenge to read, or least complete reading a book.
The radio has become my library….” Andrea

Erin’s story (given by her mum and granny)
Erin is a special young lady, about to turn 14 years of age. She was diagnosed very early on with a genetic disorder giving her the functionality of a pre-school child. She loves her Clubhouse Junior magazine, and although unable to read words, can ‘sound out’ the letters and type them on the computer.
With the patient help of her Gran, read what Erin says: ‘Dear Focus, Thank you for my for my CD and my clubhouse junior.
Love from
Erin Hugo
